Communicating Strategic Directions

Every organization has its own mission, vision, goals and objectives which serves as their guide where the organization is heading to, its directions, position in the future and setting a common ground for all the employees of such organization. These statements may deemed useless if it will not be communicated to the entire organization, even to the lowest rank occupying the position. Everyone must be involved, must be communicated and informed since everyone contributes to the success of the whole organization. Everyone has its important part regardless of rank and level. Posted above is the Mission, Vision and Core Values of Department of Education (DepEd), the government agency where I am currently belonging.

For employees of DepEd, communicating these guiding statements is a must. For new members of the family, part of the orientation for all newly hired personnel was the introduction of Mission, Vision, Core Values and the Mandates of the department. From top management, these statements must be relayed and must be known to all personnel up to the lowest position included in the organization. These must be familiarized and made to analyze the deeper meaning of its words and thoughts. Being a government employee, and a member of DepEd Family, we must put into our mind and into our heart why we are in this department in the first place. Why in all government agencies, government sectors, why we choose to be in DepEd. These statements where communicated during orientations for newly hired employees, as mentioned earlier, during seminars and training and even in management committee meetings.

In terms of communicating to the general public, teachers were required to introduce and discuss the DEPED Mission, Vision and the Core Values in their respective classrooms as the start of the class for the school year. All students were also required to understand and not only memorize the whole paragraph since it will be included in the flag raising ceremony. I have noticed it was embedded in the program in the central school where I am assigned. After singing the National Anthem, all students states the Mission, Vision as well as the Core Values of DEPED every flag raising ceremony which is conducted every day.  Moreover, students in the higher grades were encouraged to speak it loud and clear so that the lower grades may able to follow and familiarize the statement until such time that they will be able to memorize it. In addition, while having the flag raising ceremony, some parent able to hear these statements especially those parents who serves as a guardian to pre-schools and also to the passer-by. So, from the top of the organization, it will be relayed down to its administrators, and to its teaching and non-teaching personnel. From the teachers, it will be relayed to the students and subsequently to the parents indirectly which composed mostly of the general public. Not only that, to further inform the public, every schools were hereby directed to post the DepEd’s Mission, Vision and Core Values in the most vivid and clear printings and must be placed in the areas where it can be seen by everyone.

Deped also took the advantage of using the technology. In its very own DepEd website, these statements were posted and open to be read by anyone who visited the specific site as well as all the different websites of different schools under the administration of the said department. Meaning to say, these statements where always included in the transparency board of the department in all its divisions nationwide. The main take away of this step is to inform everyone, in all walks of life, the department’s responsibilities to the public as a government and educational entity.
